Diabetes matrimony: sounds strange? It’s more real than you think!
Many of us consider diabetes to be an elderly’s disease, but is it really?
Have you ever witnessed anyone from the younger generation worrying about diabetes? Have you ever thought of Gen Z getting diagnosed with it?
This World Diabetes Day, Nephroplus is on a mission to raise awareness amongst the Indian youth about their vulnerability to diabetes.
The age between 22-35 years is when most are thinking of finding a life partner or getting married. But what if, without realizing, you end up finding a partner in diabetes that intends to stay loyal to you for life?
Research shows that 14% of Indians are prediabetic, but are unaware of it. Generally, prediabetes occurs without warning, and can take 5-7 years for the symptoms to show. However, with the right awareness and knowledge, it is possible to avoid getting Type 2 Diabetes!
So, what is Prediabetes?
Prediabetes means a person’s blood glucose level is above the normal range but below the diagnostic level of diabetes. Imay lead to having too much protein in the urine leading to stress on your kidneys.
Think about it. During our youth, we mostly avoid eating too much sugar to prevent weight gain. But have you ever limited your sugar intake for the fear of becoming diabetic? Most likely not.
So, could you be at risk?
There are a number of reasons that could predispose you to diabetes, some being:
Someone already having diabetes in your family | |
Having Gestational diabetes during pregnancy | Having a high blood pressure |
Having high cholesterol | Being overweight |
Leading a lethargic lifestyle |
With or without the above predispositions, how can you be aware if you’re developing symptoms of diabetes?
Simple. Look for the following signs.
Though not alarming, you can identify the subtle signs of prediabetes. If you notice any of the following symptoms, it doesn’t confirm that you have prediabetes; but you must consider getting them checked by a professional.
Hazy vision | Cold hands and feet | Dry mouth |
Excessive thirst | Frequent urination | Increased urinary tract infections |
Increased irritability, nervousness and anxiety | Itchy skin | Thick, dark, velvety patches on your skin |
Inexplicable weight loss | Unusual fatigue | Wounds that won’t heal faster |
Tingling sensation, numbness or burning |
While the internet is a good place to gather information, never jump to any conclusions based on symptoms. Consult a doctor and seek guidance. Ask them to explain the risk.
While such signs can have a different explanation, a ball can roll down both sides of a slope. And so, it is important to trust professionals and seek medical advice when in doubt.
So, what if your doctor confirms prediabetes? What if your test shows you’re prediabetic?
With the right precautions and changes, it is possible to reverse prediabetes.
Ask your doctor the following questions, if you do not know where to start.
- What changes should I make in my diet?
- Do I need to lose weight?
- Will there be any medication for me?
- Are there any more tests that I should take?
- Based on my medical history, is there anything that should be a concern?
Remember, being prediabetic doesn’t make you diabetic. You can delay and or prevent diabetes.
While choosing a life partner, you’re unlikely to say yes before asking a hundred questions.
Isn’t it?
Before agreeing to the partnership, you would want to know how good or bad the individual would be for you and your life.
Then why be silent at the possible chance of diabetes declaring itself as your life partner?
Your health deserves a hundred questions too.
Know your risk of getting diabetes now. Every day is a good day to start your journey towards a healthier and better lifestyle.
