Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. As the name suggests, breakfast breaks the overnight fasting period. Eating our first meal has numerous benefits it encourages healthier eating, balances blood sugar levels, kick-starts metabolism, boosts energy levels, stimulates the brain and promotes heart health.

Breakfast can be a stress-free meal for those with Dialysis, where a dialysis-friendly breakfast can provide you with a good amount of fibre and protein at the same time meet your potassium, phosphorus, and sodium goals.

It important to remember that each dialysis patient’s dietary needs may vary based on their health conditions, frequency of dialysis. Adequate Protein is essential for dialysis patients to maintain muscle mass and support overall health. A dialysis-friendly breakfast should include protein-rich options like egg whites, paneer, and plant-based protein sources such as tofu, legumes, whole grains, or lean low sodium meats (skin less chicken).

Few combination of food which can be included in dialysis friendly breakfast could be Peas paratha with curd, rava appam, idly, dosa, and green gram dosa can be taken with dhal, sambar and freshly prepared vegetable chutney rather than coconut or peanut chutneys. Upma or poha could be accompanied with scrambled eggs whites, boiled egg white or omelette (with 2 whites) or soaked and boiled legumes. Medu Vada although deep fried is an excellent protein breakfast item when had with sambar. It also gives you those extra kilocalories you would need after a dialysis session. A classic English breakfast could include wheat/corn flakes with some milk, chicken sausages, baked beans and egg whites.

Fruits that are dialysis friendly can be included in your breakfast like Apple (85g/ 3/4piece), pineapple (70g/ ¾ tin slice), Guava white (35g /1 piece) or Papaya (60g / 2 thin slices). Avoid juices as they would add to your overall fluid intake and also will increase potassium levels.

Skipping breakfast deprives the body of essential nutrients, leading to fatigue, irritability, and impaired cognitive function. Some of the long-term consequences include weight gain, nutrient deficiencies, and an increased risk of chronic diseases. It is suggested to prioritise your balanced breakfast for overall health and well-being. Mind full eating and portion control on breakfast will help out dialysis patients for balancing and start there morning healthy and energetic.
