d) Ultra-processed foods.

Unprocessed foods: These are foods that are not altered and have no added ingredients.

Processed culinary ingredients: These are foods that are simply processed by adding them to other foods.

Ultra-processed foods: These are heavily altered foods with high levels of refined sugar, unhealthy fat, and salt.

Things that Hemodialysis Patients need to remember about Ultra-Processed Foods:

High Sodium: Ultra-processed foods have high sodium content, which increases blood pressure and fluid retention in hemodialysis patients, leading to serious complications as they struggle to balance fluid levels and blood pressure.

Low in Nutrients: Ultra-processed foods are low in nutrient content, including essential minerals, vitamins, and fiber. Hemodialysis patients require a nutrient-dense diet to maintain their health and meet their nutritional requirements.

High Potassium Content: Ultra-processed foods often contain artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and flavors that are high in potassium, which can lead to hyperkalemia. This condition is dangerous and can cause muscle weakness, heart arrhythmias, and other cardiac issues in hemodialysis patients.

Phosphorus Content: These foods contain high phosphorus levels, leading to hyperphosphatemia, which increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and bone disorders. The preservatives and additives in ultra-processed foods can also cause inflammation and oxidative stress.

Weight Gain and Obesity: Ultra-processed foods are high in calories and offer low satiety, leading to weight gain.
