Gardening is a great way for individuals who are undergoing dialysis as it involves some light exercise and stay invested in a renal diet. It is free from harmful pesticides, chemicals and much more organic than the veggies available in market. Fuelling up with kidney-friendly foods you grew yourself is much more satisfying!

Whether you’re planning your first patio container garden or are a seasoned raised bed gardener, consider adding these kidney-friendly vegetables and fruits to your home garden this year for your good renal health.

Gourds:

Gourds are the Gods of vegetables for kidney diseases. These gourds are low in sodium and potassium content. Hence, they are ideal for consumption for people with kidney disorders. Several varieties of gourds are available which include bottle gourd, snake gourd, ridge gourd, striped gourd, bitter gourd, and other gourds. It is easy to grow them by seed sowing method throughout the year. Summer and monsoon are the best time to plant seeds. So, Choose Gourd vegetables regularly in your diet to get maximum benefits.

Cucumber:

Water-rich cucumbers are the great option for individuals who are on dialysis. It keeps well hydrated without consuming extra water or liquids. Cucumber helps in maintaining electrolyte levels, control blood pressure, and reduce the increase of waste products in the body. You don’t need a large garden to grow them. Cucumbers do well in containers and pots. Add your harvest to salads or eat them as a kidney-friendly snack.

Bell peppers

Bell peppers are such a versatile vegetable and healthy addition to a dialysis diet. Red bell peppers are low in potassium and a good source of vitamins A, C and B6. They are a great vegetable for beginner gardeners. Bell peppers do well in containers and require low maintaince. French beans:

Low in potassium and phosphorous, Beans make a good addition to your garden and in your renal high protein diet. It is low in calories, fat, carbohydrates. However, it has a lot of fibre and antioxidants that protect body from sickness and promote good health. Harvest the young beans to enjoy in salad, poha, upma, curries, pasta and pulao.

Strawberries:

Strawberries (and berries in general) have a lower amount of potassium than some other types of fruits, making them a decent choice for a kidney-friendly diet. They’re also a good source of antioxidants, fibre, and manganese. To grow them in your home garden need at least 8 hours of full sunlight each day, you can grow them in pots, hanging baskets, or raised beds.
