Drumstick

Drumstick is also known as “Moringa Oleifera”. It is widely known for its functional food properties, such as anti-diabetic, antibacterial, anticancer and anti-inflammatory effects. Beyond their culinary appeal, drumstick are a powerhouse of nutrients; packed with vitamin A and C, contributing to immune health and antioxidant defense. Significant levels of calcium and potassium support bone health and electrolyte balance. Iron content aids in red blood cell production and oxygen transport.

Drumstick for dialysis patients

DRUMSTICK & DIALYSIS:-
Drumstick becomes widely available during summer season. Its high availability during summer make it a commonly consumed vegetable, especially in south Asian households. While drumstick pods and leaves are undeniably healthy, they may not be suitable for everyone. However they are not without controversy, particularly for individuals with certain health conditions such as CKD. The high potassium and phosphorous content in moringa for instance can pose challenges for people undergoing dialysis.

1. Nutritional Care
-Drumstick Leaves: Very high in potassium and phosphorus.
-Drumsticks (Pods): Lower in potassium compared to leaves, but still moderate and need controlled portions.

2. Potassium Reduction via Leaching
Leaching effectively reduces potassium content by transferring a portion into the cooking water, which is subsequently discarded.

Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil, add leaves or pods, boil for two to three minutes, then immediately drain and discard the water. For enhanced potassium reduction, repeat the blanching step with fresh water.

3. Recommended allowance

  • Per 100gms Drumstick leaves contain 109mg phosphorous and 397mg potassium.
  • After leaching process potassium was reduced to ~70 to 100mg for 50gms Which can be included once per week.

  • Per 100gms Drumstick pods contain 52mg phosphorous which is slightly lesser than leaves, 419mg potassium.
  • After leaching potassium content of drumstick will be ~80 to 119mg for 50gms which can be included twice per week.

    4. Enjoy in moderation
Stick to the serving sizes and avoid cooking drumstick with other high potassium vegetables.

    5. Listen to your body
Pay attention to how your body responds to including Moringa in your diet. If you experience any adverse effects or changes in your health consult with health professional for the further advice.

    Core message:
Drumstick leaves and pods can be enjoyed in small amounts if you leach them well, stick to the recommended serving sizes, and keep track of your serum potassium. Always coordinate any dietary changes with your renal care team to make sure they fit into your overall fluid, potassium and phosphorus goals.
