Monsoon Challenges and Immunity needs in Dialysis Care

Maintaining a balanced diet becomes even more vital when undergoing dialysis. Proper nutrition plays a crucial role in supporting your body natural defences. A strong immune system helps protect against infections, which can be a concern during monsoon. Choosing nutrient-rich foods can help maintain energy levels and overall well-being.

The humid environment promotes the growth of bacteria and other pathogens. Water sources can become contaminated, increasing the risk of exposure during dialysis. Compromised immune system makes ones more susceptible to infections. A balanced diet can help strengthen the body’s natural defences. Focusing on nutrient-rich foods provide essential building blocks for optimal immune system. Through mindful dietary choices, one can take proactive steps towards better health.

Why Individuals on Dialysis are More Vulnerable during the Monsoon?

  • Compromised immunity: End Stage Renal disease (ESRD) impairs both innate and adaptive immune responses. Uremic toxins and chronic inflammation reduces lymphocyte function, making patients more susceptible to infections.
  • Frequent healthcare exposure :  Regular visits to dialysis centers increase exposure to potential pathogens, especially during outbreaks.
  • Malnutrition: Commonly found, malnutrition further weakens immune responses, creating a cycle of increased infection risk.

ROLE OF NUTRITION IN IMMUNITY DURING DIALYSIS

1. Protein-Energy Malnutrition (PEM)

PEM is prevalent among dialysis patients and is linked to impaired immune responses. Ensuring sufficient protein intake is vital for the synthesis of immune cells and antibodies. A high protein diet can help replenish lost protein and support essential bodily functions. This includes maintaining a strong immune system, which is vital for protecting against infections.

Recommended sources: Paneer, egg whites, tofu, and cooked lentils (as per potassium/phosphorus limits).

2. Micronutrients That Boost Immunity:

Vitamin D: Deficiency is common in dialysis patients and is associated with increased infection risk. Supplementation has been shown to reduce infection rates.

Spending time outdoors can be a valuable wat to boost vitamin D naturally.

Zinc: Essential for immune function, zinc deficiency correlates with increased inflammation and frailty. Adequate intake supports immune responses and reduces infection susceptibility

Recommended sources: paneer, tofu, egg, masoor dal, mushroom.

Pair zinc foods with vitamin C-rich vegetables (like capsicum or cabbage) to enhance absorption.

Vitamin C and E: These antioxidants combat oxidative stress and support immune cell function.

Recommended sources: Guava, cabbage, capsicum, cauliflower, amla( 1 small piece), strawberries (1/2 cup), lemon juice (1 Tbsp).

3. Hydration and Fluid Balance:

Adhere to prescribed fluid intake limits. Use safe, boiled or filtered water for cooking and drinking.

4. Gut health

A healthy gut microbiome contributes to immunity, including small portions of hung curd and buttermilk (if potassium levels are safe) can help.

5. Avoid Pro-inflammatory foods

Limit processed, high sugar and deep fried food items that can be stress to immune system.

DIETARY PRACTICES:-

  • Consume freshly prepared well cooked meals
  • Avoid raw or street foods to reduce the exposure of pathogens. Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly
  • Ensure adequate protein intake as per advice
  • Incorporate micro–nutrient rich foods, considering dialysis related restrictions.
  • Maintain good hygiene by washing hands frequently and keeping surroundings clean
  • Use natural herbs like ginger, turmeric and garlic in the diet. Which have immunity boosting properties.
