~HCV Seroprevalance in those on Maintenance Hemodialysis is 20%~
~Indian patients on hemodialysis are increasing at 25 % per year~
~Majority of the burden (88%) is hidden in the low-risk population who are not screened for HCV~
Hyderabad, 28th July 2022 – To mark this year’s World Hepatitis Day, NephroPlus, India’s largest dialysis network, hosted a webinar in collaboration with leading Nephrologists, Researchers, Hepatologists, and Clinicians on Tuesday 26th July 2022. The experts on the panel discussed risk factors identified for high incidence of HCV infection in HD (Haemodialysis) patients; the most important ones are the number of blood transfusions, duration of the hemodialysis treatment, and nosocomial transmissions due to inadequate infection-control measures.
The global prevalence of hepatitis C is estimated to be 3%, with 12.5 million people in India alone infected with the virus. It is also important to note that Hepatitis C is the most common hepatotropic viral infection that affects patients on maintenance hemodialysis. Furthermore, HCV infection in HD patients has been associated with high morbidity and mortality.
This knowledge-sharing session also brought together the country’s most reputed clinicians to talk about Hepatitis, its impact on dialysis patients, dialysis centres, and potential solutions. NephroPlus emphasized the importance of managing Hepatitis through a multidisciplinary approach for hemodialysis patients through this exclusive virtual event during the sessions. The subject matter experts shared their experience in real patient care settings and, coupled with insights from their academic and research work, emphasized the need for strict implementation of and adherence to infection control practices during Dialysis to prevent transmission of blood-borne pathogens such as HCV in hemodialysis patients
In his talk, Dr. Vivekananda Jha, Executive Director, George Institute for Global Health India, and a Professor of Nephrology at the University of Oxford, described the correlation between Hepatitis C and kidney diseases. “Hepatitis plays a vital role in patient’s lives with kidney diseases. We all know kidney disease by itself is complex. Serious health conditions such as kidney diseases make patients more vulnerable to liver infections, including Hepatitis C and other liver infections. However, Hepatitis is a condition that can be treated by proper medication. Medical science has made immense progress, and we are in a fortunate position to be able to either prevent or treat hepatitis C. For hepatitis B, we have accines available. All chronic kidney patients should be vaccinated against HBV,”
Echoing his thoughts, eminent Nephrologist Dr. Sanjay Agarwal, Professor and Head of Nephrology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), commented, “The HCV infection can be diagnosed by detecting anti-HCV antibodies in the patient. Various factors that affect the magnitude of HCV infection include the geographic distribution of population, duration of Dialysis for a patient, a pool of HCV patients in a dialysis unit/clinic, practice patterns, number of blood transfusions inpatient, co-infection with other viruses, and tests employed for diagnosis. It is to be noted that the longer the duration of Dialysis for a patient, the higher the risk of HCV infection.”
One study by Dr. Sanjay Agarwal and two other authors revealed that a “marked increase of HCV infection among patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) was likely to be due to nosocomial spread, indicating that patients who spent long periods on hemodialysis were more likely to develop HCV Infection.
While discussing the clinical features of HCV infection, Dr. Agarwal further highlighted that “the Majority of HCV patients are asymptomatic, and transmission is less where isolation is practiced. Therefore, HCV infection has become the most prevalent hepatotoxic viral infection in Maintenance Haemodialysis (MHD) patients. In India, HCV prevalence in hemodialysis ranges from 4.3 to 45%, while the global average is 6 to 60%, making it an alarming health crisis in the renal space. Furthermore, the situation needs to be addressed because hemodialysis patients with HCV have a higher mortality risk than HCV-negative patients.”
According to the experts, treatment HCV is now highly safe and effective, made possible with orally administered drugs called DAA (Direct Acting Anti-Viral Drugs) with a 90-95% cure rate after 3-6 mths of treatment, available at a fairly low price in India. The National Viral Hepatitis Control Program (NVHCP) launched on 28th July 2018 by the Govt. of India has also achieved some remarkable goals that include 1.3 lacs of cured patients and 2-3 lacs of population has been undergoing treatment .
The discussion also called for regular counselling to help patients understand the situation’s complexity and the need to act fast. In addition, the experts present noted that it is important that the patients maintain a positive mental attitude and adhere to regular testing and follow-up.
Adding further to the session, Dr. Suresh Sankar, Senior Vice President, Clinical Affairs at NephroPlus, commented, “The webinar provided an opportunity for experts to discuss the very worrisome findings and chart a way forward. We always want to be at the forefront of conversations that seek the betterment of dialysis care in India and beyond. NephroPlus has seen a decline in the prevalence of Hepatitis C in its network. There has been a 65% decrease in prevalence over 10 years. However, the increase in the absolute number of patients on Dialysis is growing, especially in smaller towns, and comes with unique challenges. We at NephroPlus recognize Hepatitis C infection as a significant health impact factor and have a diligent screening, prevention, and surveillance policy for BBV infection to improve patient safety by special infection control measures. In addition, we have stratified centres by prevalence % (centres > 10% of patients are recognized as high-risk centres per KDIGO 2018)—initiatives in such centre to mitigate risks of Hep C transmission. We are committed to the cause of preventing Hep C in Dialysis patients. We are happy to support other dialysis centres to set up a Hep C surveillance, prevention, and treatment program.”
The webinar, conducted to mark World Hepatitis Day, was co-chaired by Prof. Vivekanand Jha, Executive Director at The George Institute for Global Health, and Dr. Sanjeev Saxena, Chairman & Senior Consultant PSRI, New Delhi. Eminent Speakers – Dr. Sanjay Agarwal, Prof. & Head Nephrology at AIIMS, Dr. Amit Goel, Additional Professor, Department of Gastroenterology, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, and the panel discussion constituted – Dr. Anupama Y. J, Head of Department of Nephrology Nanjappa Hospital, Shimoga, Dr. Manisha Sahay, Nephrologist and Head of Department of Nephrology Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad, Dr. Neeru Aggarwal, Clinician, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali, Ghaziabad, and Dr. Chandan Chaudhari, Consultant Nephrologist, Wockhardt Hospitals, South Mumbai

Caring for your kidneys isn’t just about managing your dialysis for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients—it’s also about paying attention to your gut. Recent studies have discovered a powerful link between gut health and kidney function. By focusing on this connection, you can make smarter dietary decisions that support both your kidneys and your overall health.
Chronic kidney disease, CKD, is among the leading diseases killing over 800 million people worldwide being a major world’s public health challenge. According to the Global Burden of Disease System, CKD was a cause of 1. 2 million deaths. COVID-19 has intensified the risk of CKD; further, estimates suggest that it may rank 13th among the leading causes of mortality in 2030 and the fifth in 2040 at the global level. Investigators also indicated that CKD might become the 13th leading cause of death by 2030 and the fifth most prevalent cause of death by 2040 globally. This highlights the urgent need for enhanced understanding and effective management of CKD to mitigate its devastating impact on global health.
The Gut-Kidney Axis
Gut health refers to the state of one’s stomach or intestines. The immune system, hormone regulation, digestion, and other bodily processes all depend on this balance, which makes it crucial. Our gut contains a diverse community of microorganisms known as the gut microbiota, which play a major role in our overall health. Recent study has supported current research papers discussing the significance of the gut in cases of chronic kidney disease (CKD). For example, there is evidence linking kidney illness to the gut microbiota and a specific bacterium called Ruminococcus bromii. It reacts chemically with a variety of bodily components and could be the cause of the progression of chronic kidney disease.
Dietary Tips for Dialysis Patients
So, what can you do to promote a healthy gut-kidney connection? Here are some dietary tips to get you started:
It has been observed beyond doubt that the health of the gut is linked with the health of the kidneys. Therefore, dialysis patients need to make correct nutrition choices to enhance the gut-kidney health they have. And so, of course, as they say, ‘Every bite counts’, and gut health matters a lot as it promotes kidney health.
Mr. Kamal D Shah, Co-Founder, NephroPlus
With the global rise in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and an ageing population, the demand for dialysis is higher than ever in India. This situation calls for continuous evolution and innovation within the industry to meet the increasing needs effectively. The significance of dialysis extends beyond its immediate life-saving capabilities and the dialysis industry stands at a pivotal point, where embracing change is crucial to shaping a future that prioritizes patient well-being and operational efficiency.
Traditional Dialysis method and how emerging innovations closes the gap
Traditionally, dialysis has played a vital role in substituting the filtration function of failing kidneys, allowing patients to manage their symptoms and sustain life. Conventional dialysis methods, while lifesaving, often struggle with challenges like limited accessibility, high costs, and inconsistent patient adherence. The rigidity of in-centre dialysis schedules and the lack of portability have imposed significant constraints on patients’ quality of life, restricting their autonomy and flexibility. The necessity for innovation is clear: we must look beyond the status quo and embrace the transformative power of technology. Adapting to digital innovations is not just a technological upgrade—it’s a revolution in care.
Recent advancements in renal replacement therapy are promising to address these limitations and redefine the landscape of dialysis care. According to a recent report by ICMR, the introduction of newer technologies has led to incremental improvements in access, with estimates suggesting a 10%-15% increase in the number of patients receiving treatment in areas where these innovations are implemented.
Digital Innovations and Breakthrough Technologies
Digital innovations address challenges by making dialysis care more accessible and cost-effective. Telemedicine and remote monitoring reduce the need for frequent hospital visits, lowering overall treatment costs. For example, closing the barriers of distance as telemedicine initiatives in rural areas of India have significantly improved access to care for remote patients. Wearable devices and mobile health apps enhance patient engagement and self-management, leading to better adherence and outcomes. AI-driven analytics improve clinical decision-making, optimizing treatment efficacy and patient care.
There have been few innovations so far in the dialysis delivery process itself. Most of these innovations have centred around making dialysis machines smaller, more user-friendly so they can be used by the patients themselves and portable, enabling travel despite being on dialysis.
Hemodiafiltration (HDF), a therapy that merges hemodialysis and hemofiltration to effectively remove both small and middle-sized solutes from the blood as compared to conventional hemodialysis which removes mainly small-sized solutes is one innovation that is gaining adoption in many countries. This technique has also been associated with reduced inflammation, improved nutritional status, and better preservation of residual renal function. Hemodiafiltration is available in many dialysis centres in India as well, albeit at a higher cost than conventional hemodialysis.
The slow pace of innovation is thankfully, a thing of the past. There are several teams of researchers today working on radical ideas which have the potential to change the way we think about dialysis. Most of these are in various stages of development and clinical trials and could take a while to become available even in developed countries such as the US and take even longer to reach India.
These innovations promise significant improvements in patients’ quality of life. As these technologies advance and eventually become available, they will bring new hope to dialysis patients in India, emphasizing the need to adapt our current model of care to integrate these ground breaking devices.
The Current State and Future Prospects
Partnerships between healthcare providers, technology companies, and policymakers have also made it a smooth transition for driving innovation and improving operational efficiency to take over. Collaboration will fuel the development of new technologies and ensures their successful integration into existing healthcare systems. These partnerships can also facilitate shared knowledge and resources, accelerating the pace of innovation in dialysis care.
The evolution of dialysis care reflects a profound shift in its goals—from merely managing symptoms to genuinely enhancing patients’ quality of life. Historically, the focus was on basic survival and comfort, but recent innovations have introduced biometric parameters that measure and optimize treatmenteffectiveness more precisely. As dialysis technology advances, it is crucial for people to embrace these changes as well, as it will foster a cooperative effort to provide better, more human-centric care.

We live in an era where there is a strong emphasis on global health awareness campaigns, and Anti-Tobacco Day serves as a timely reminder of the ongoing issues faced by rising tobacco smoking among individuals. While the dangers to respiratory health are well-known, the impact on vital organs like the kidneys remains less discussed yet is equally concerning.
Understanding the Impact of Tobacco on Kidney Health
Tobacco is a significant risk factor for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). The World Health Organization (WHO) helps to point out the direct link between smoking and an increased risk of CKD and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). A report by the National Kidney Foundation further reveals that smokers are more susceptible to proteinuria, a sign of potential kidney damage. Thus, raising awareness about this issue is crucial.
India’s Tobacco Production and Diversification Efforts
In addition to being a major consumer of tobacco, India stands as the second-largest producer globally, manufacturing 761,335 tons. The majority of this production is concentrated in three states, employing nearly 25 million people across the production value chain.
Recognizing the health and economic implications, the Indian Ministry of Agriculture, Cooperation, and Farmers Welfare introduced a Crop Diversification Scheme under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna program. As of 2018, the government reported a diversion of 67,512 hectares, or 8.7% of designated tobacco-growing land, since 2015-2016.
In 2022, India’s unmanufactured tobacco production stood at approximately 2 thousand tons, representing 13.4% of the global production of 5.78 million tons. This marks an 11.9% increase from the 690.0 thousand tons produced in 2010. Moreover, India utilized an estimated 3 thousand hectares for tobacco cultivation in 2022, a 4.3% decrease from 2010.
The Need for Anti-Tobacco Initiatives
Despite increasing awareness, tobacco-related illnesses, including kidney diseases, continue to rise. WHO report on the global tobacco epidemic, 2023 exposed the tobacco industry’s tactics to undermine smoke-free regulations. From discrediting evidence on secondhand smoke to promoting Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) as “clean” alternatives, these tactics demand vigilance from policymakers and the public alike. The industry also influences policy-making through lobbying, aiming to weaken tobacco control measures and undermine existing laws by promoting ENDS (Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems) through traditional and social media. Regulators must remain vigilant against these tactics to protect public health.
Driving Change through Awareness and Education
In the last 15 years, there has been significant progress in implementing smoke-free measures globally. In 2007, only 15 countries were believed to have 100% smoke-free cafés, pubs, and bars, a number which rose to 88 by 2022. Despite this, these venues remain the least protected under national laws. Meanwhile, in 2007, 81 countries had smoke-free healthcare facilities and 78 had smoke-free educational facilities. By 2022, these numbers increased to 142 and 149 countries, respectively. This significant increase underscores the growing global commitment to creating healthier environments by reducing exposure to second-hand smoke in crucial public spaces.
Embracing a Smoke-Free Future
I believe, that there’s a growing trend to extend smoke-free laws across various public venues and outdoor spaces globally. Also, as a doctor, I feel that we must empower people with information on the ill effects of smoking and the benefits of quitting. Hence, by providing accessible and effective smoking cessation support services such as counselling, medications, and hotlines one can ensure that these materials are widely available and cheap to all those who want to quit smoking.
Therefore, it is essential to create a smoke-free world that demands collaborative efforts and robust policies. As we mark Anti-Tobacco Day this year, we can renew our commitment to safeguarding public health and fostering a tobacco-free environment for future generations.

The initiative is another step undertaken by the brand to build awareness amongst dialysis patients on how food can help them manage their ailments.
Dr. Suresh Sankar, Senior Vice President, Clinical Affairs, NephroPlus, said, “Eating the right foods and avoiding foods high in sodium, potassium, and phosphorus prevent or delay health complications amongst CKD patients. While there is a general lack of awareness about the role of diet and nutrition in managing health, awareness is more critical for dialysis patients. It is important for patients with Chronic Kidney Disease to know the nutritional value of the food they consume and how their eating and drinking habits directly impact their kidneys. In addition, knowing more about the calorie count of foods and the composition of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are much needed.”
“The MDRD study – a scientific multicentre study in the 1990s, aimed to investigate the effect of protein restriction and blood pressure control on the progression of disease in patients with chronic renal diseases. It was observed that dietary interventions can have a positive effect in patients with moderate renal insufficiency. Also, among persons with more pronounced proteinuria, there was a significantly slower worsening of kidney fucntion”, added Dr. Sankar.
The purpose of the diet is to keep the levels of electrolytes, minerals, and fluid in your body balanced when you have CKD or are on dialysis.
Work with a dietitian to develop a meal plan that includes foods you enjoy eating while maintaining your kidney health. Again, a little bit of planning and organizing helps.
Listed below are a few things a dialysis patient can consider to manage their health condition.

Hyderabad, May 2022: NephroPlus, a leading dialysis network and a trailblazer in redefining
dialysis care in India, is proud to announce another milestone achievement by launching four standalone dialysis centers in Uzbekistan. The accomplishment is the first successful step undertaken by NephroPlus after bagging the $100M+ worth of dialysis services contract with the Ministry of Health in the Republic of Uzbekistan Government to construct and operationalize independent dialysis centers in the country. The company is constructing these dialysis centers on a turnkey basis, wherein they independently commission and operationalize these centers, and interestingly two of these have already begun operating in a record time of only six months
While an initial target is to run four centers in Uzbekistan, the one in Karakalpakstan at Nukus became operational on April 18, 2022, and two at Khorezm, Urgench, and Bogot each, are on the verge of being launched in May 2022 itself. Another sizable dialysis center in Tashkent, which will be ready by July 2022, is being aimed as Asia’s largest, which is to serve over 750 patients. To echo, this initiative is a part of a 10-year long Public-Private Partnership agreement between NephroPlus and the Ministry of Health, Republic of Uzbekistan, with NephroPlus looking at generating INR 750 – 800 Cr in the entire project term. At present, the company has already put in an investment of about INR ______ for this project in Uzbekistan.
Upon winning this competitive bidding, NephroPlus promises to provide quality dialysis care to Uzbekistan patients in parallel with best industry practices, quality patient care, reduced infection risk, and no out-of-pocket payments from patients. For this project, NephroPlus will be establishing a 100% owned local subsidiary to operate the centers. Resources and technical expertise from India will be utilized to implement and supervise international standard clinical protocols to improve the quality of dialysis care in Uzbekistan. NephroPlus will be using the expertise from its state-of-the-art training academy, Enpidia, which produces the finest dialysis technicians and nurses in the industry. These centers are expected to support over 1,300 Uzbekistan patients in improving their quality of life.
Despite the challenges of COVID-19, NephroPlus was successful in operationalizing 2 centers in a mere period of only 6 months, and on this occasion Mr. Vikram Vuppala, Founder and CEO, NephroPlus said: “We ambition to extend quality healthcare dialysis services to Uzbek citizens just like we have done in India. Not only do we wish to support people to improve their quality of living, but we also plan to develop a nephrology ecosystem that offers quality, easy and affordable dialysis services in the country. Operationalising the Urgench and Bogot dialysis centers at Khorezmn in a record time of only 6 months is a massive achievement, wherein everything from construction to commissioning has been done by NephroPlus on a turnkey basis. In Uzbekistan, we will be the first ones to be introducing peritoneal dialysis services, wherein people can obtain dialysis in the comfort of their homes. This will benefit the rural population in remote areas and save a lot of time, effort, and money, which was otherwise consumed in traveling to faraway dialysis centers.”
Mr. Kamal Shah, Co-founder, NephroPlus added: “NephroPlus will offer end-to-end Hemodialysis and Peritoneal dialysis treatment modalities to the EDRD patients in Uzbekistan, wherein the frequency of dialysis will be at 144 treatments per year per patient. This will further improve clinical outcomes for dialysis patients and bring huge savings for the Republic of Uzbekistan. Currently, patients aren’t able to obtain quality services regularly and the Government’s push toward efficiency will work wonders to alleviate this concern. At existing centers, the technical expertise of staff and quality of services was also somewhat a concern, which NephroPlus is committed to improving. NephroPlus will make Uzbekistan one of Asia’s largest hubs for quality, quick, and economical dialysis services.”
Speaking on this tremendous achievement and its subsequent impact, Mr ABC XYZ from the Ministry of Health in the Republic of Uzbekistan went on to share, “Amidst the growing demand for quality dialysis in the country, we are committed to improving the healthcare services in the country through unique and dynamic PPP model wherein, NephroPlus, Asia’s leading dialysis services provider, has been selected through an open competitive bidding process. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government is working to continually expand affordable and high-grade healthcare infrastructure in the nation of Uzbekistan and shall soon be able to align it to international quality standards.”

~First Indian body to work in line with the government in drafting projects and policies that will elevate the growth of the dialysis market in the country~
Delhi, XY, June 2022: To deepen collaboration, maintain standard operating protocols, and address challenges deterrent to the industry’s growth, leading dialysis service providers in India have joined hands to launch the much-awaited Dialysis Services Providers Association of India (DSPAI) today. The body, which has been in the works for some time, comes in response to the need for a platform that will engage with the government on policy formulation, work closely with the nephrology community to set operating protocols, and clear roadblocks or address grievances that are hampering the progress of the industry.
The DSPAI is a product of the coming together of leading dialysis service providers to forge a progressive path for practitioners and patients alike. The association also sets out to engage with the government and policy makers to develop equitable policies for the dialysis community to ensure quality delivery and sustenance of the industry, which keep patient care at the centre while building a robust ecosystem of dialysis care providers. The DSPAI will also serve as a platform for crucial advocacy toward engendering transformational industry growth and improved outcome-based care.
According to Mr. Vikram Vuppala, Founder & CEO, NephroPlus, and a spokesperson for the association said, “the move is geared primarily towards deepening engagement with other stakeholders. We want to be able to conveniently interface with the central and state governments on matters that have to do with enlightenment and reforms to bring about improved care for dialysis patients. This will also involve engaging better with policymakers towards policy actions that can create a mutually agreeable ecosystem for all stakeholders and ensure patients get the quality care they deserve,”
At the launch of the association, Dr. Vishwanath Billa, Consultant Nephrologist & Director, Apex Kidney Care Pvt. Ltd said, “there is a need for continuous upgrade of protocols, and the association presents an opportunity for practitioners to network, brainstorm, and deliberate on ways to achieve better clinical outcomes using outcome-based approaches to dialysis.”
“Another crucial aspect is setting a viable and sustainable price point to help boost dialysis access. We also understand that training and capacity building is extremely important to maintain globally accepted standards in India,” Dr. Billa added
The association will be looking to further advocate for long-standing priority issues such as policies for stand-alone dialysis centres and operational standards. Further, such centres would be guided, putting in place a well-defined quality accreditation framework for dialysis procedures, entrenching clinical outcome-based care, and enhancing the ease-of-doing-business index for dialysis companies in India. It is hoped that such actions will increase the visibility of the industry and the recognition of dialysis as a specialized field in India.
As per Mr. Aseem Garg, Founder & Promoter, DCDC Health Services, “this advocacy is intended to compel policymakers and regulators not by antagonism, but as crucial partners and collaborators towards the growth of dialysis care in India. Our main goal is to work with government and other stakeholders in policy formulation and regulations so that we can help improve the efficiency of the profession and ensure our members are well looked out for,”
Expressing his opinion on the association’s launch, Mr. Shaurya Tayal, Founder of Rahi Care, said, “We are optimistic that, through the association, the commoditization of dialysis will be prevented, and it will be given its due recognition as a life-saving therapy. Practitioners like us are confident that with the proper framework, dialysis services will become more sustainable to ensure that quality care is delivered to the last mile and patients’ lives are improved.”
“We would like to see an ecosystem where dialysis service providers and the government will become partners in progress. We want to make India a destination for dialysis care and know that we cannot do that without the right policies. We need to point out that this association is different from the existing association, as they focus on dialysis technology and provide financial, tax, and consulting services for their clients. However, we at DSPAI are the dialysis service providers, and this association is meant for collaboration, advocacy, and interests,” notes Mr. Prabhat K. Shrivastava, Co-founder & Director, Vituscare Medlife Pvt. Ltd.
Notable founding members of the association are NephroPlus, Apex Kidney Care, DCDC Kidney Care, Rahi Care, Apollo Dialysis, 7Med, ESKAG Sanjeevani, and Vituscare Medlife.
~With the in-built cloud storage, the new patent-winning product from NephroPlus offers readable and simplified patient clinical reports~
Hyderabad, XY, July 2022: NephroPlus, a leading dialysis network and a trailblazer in redefining dialysis care in India, announced the launch of the revolutionary all-digitalized dialyzer reprocessor, RenovaTM. With the launch of this first-ever product, NephroPlus aims to enhance the technology and equipment associated with dialysis procedures to improve the overall efficiency and offer the affordability of lifesustaining dialysis treatment for patients suffering from end-stage renal disease diseases (ESRD) in the country. At present, that breakthrough innovation will start as a pilot project across four centers in Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bangalore.
RenovaTM is a cloud-connected device. Using the power of the internet cloud, Biomedical Engineers can troubleshoot and fix issues remotely. Currently, if there’s a problem with any Reprocessing Machine, a Biomedical Engineer must travel to the Centre. In an age of Dialysis centers being situated across the length and breadth of the country, it can be costly for Biomedical Engineers to travel to centers for every breakdown. With RenovaTM, they can log in to the machine using the RenovaTM app, which allows them to see the machine’s status, including observing the functioning of every valve in the device during operations to figure out what is wrong. After getting some information on the cause of the problem, they can decide if a part needs to be changed or some configuration parameter needs to be fixed. All this saves a lot of time to resolve the issue and saves on time, cost, and effort for Biomedical Engineers.
On announcing the launch of Renova, Mr. Vikram Vuppala, Founder and CEO, NephroPlus, said, “Over time, a lot of advances have been seen in medical treatments, yet they can be ineffective, inefficient, and consumer-unfriendly. These shortcomings arise due to a range of problems due to medical errors. Such problems beg for innovative solutions involving all aspects of healthcare from technology to treatment delivery.”
We at NephroPlus were unhappy with one critical piece of equipment used widely in Dialysis Centres in the developing world – the Dialyser Reprocessing Machine, which is an excellent way to save costs for the patient without compromising on the quality. Our team worked on this machine, building one from scratch,
by solving many problems in the devices available in the Indian and international markets. It gives us immense pleasure to announce that RenovaTM has been granted a patent for the several innovations we have introduced. We plan to make these machines available to other dialysis centers to promote accessibility. We hope this will improve the efficiency of dialysis centers in the developing world and help to provide safe, effective dialysis to all patients,” added Mr. Vuppala
A dialyzer, also called the artificial kidney, is an essential apparatus to filter out all the extra sugar, salt, waste, and fluid, leading the cleaned blood back to the patient’s body. It is also the most expensive consumable in the dialysis procedure, given its paramount functionality. The traditional dialyzer reprocessor requires manual cleaning, which can lead to patient cross-infection. However, the automated reprocessing units currently available eliminate the scope of manual errors that ultimately lead to cross infections, residual chemical infusion, environmental contamination, and much more.
Speaking on the latest innovation, Mr. Kamal Shah, Co-founder & Director of Guest Services, NephroPlus, said, “In the past, machines in the market had an archaic printing system where the results of each Reprocessing Cycle were printed on a piece of paper and then stapled to the Case Sheet of the patient. With Case Sheets also going online, it was ridiculous to have to print out the Reprocessing Status. Further, the quality of the printer was also poor resulting in replacement costs being incurred every few months. All these factors prompted us to shift the entire process to the cloud. We are an absolute delight to introduce our breakthrough innovation RenovaTM. Through this product, the reprocessed data will be stored on the cloud, enabling analysis and correlated with Clinical Outcomes, which will help improve the processes.”
“Furthermore, doctors will get access to reprocessing data which is stored online. Better data analysis will be possible, including correlating reprocessing data with clinical outcomes. Patients will benefit as they will get access to a very safe and efficient reprocessing machine which will deliver better outcomes,” added Mr. Shah
Many studies have revealed that the provision of medical services for the treatment of end-stage-kidney diseases (ESRD) poses severe financial challenges because of well-equipped modalities related to dialysis services. By introducing the revolutionary reprocessing technology, NephroPlus has offered a way to save costs of dialysis care services without compromising the quality. Mass manufacture of RenovaTM is in progress as the brand plans to install the unit across its 270 centers nationwide.

People receiving this therapy can continue with their lives normally, yet there are many myths about the treatment and what it does to your life.
Many issues demand your attention as you develop a ‘New Normal’ in your life. Let’s understand how to filter myths from the facts
Regardless of what brought you to the point of kidney failure and the need for Dialysis, it would be best if you manage your physical health regularly. Staying healthy and strong will help you cope with the stress of Dialysis. Follow a nutritious diet, exercise, and monitor your blood pressure and blood values to stay healthy.
NephroPlus, a leading dialysis network and a trailblazer in redefining dialysis care in India, has filtered six critical myths surrounding life on dialysis and reveals how life on dialysis is not a death sentence.
Chronic Kidney Disease is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. A recent WHO study reveals that chronic kidney disease is among the top 10 causes of death globally1 . Other studies
also show that over 1,000,000 new patients are diagnosed with end-stage kidney diseases per year. The number of patients attributable to chronic Dialysis is 1.75 lakhs, with 129 per million population2 .

With the in-built cloud storage, the new patent-winning dialyzer reprocessor offers readable and uncomplicated patient clinical reports of dialysis processes
NephroPlus, a leading dialysis network and a trailblazer in redefining dialysis care in India, announced the launch of the revolutionary all-digitalized dialyzer reprocessor, RenovaTM. With the launch of this first-ever product innovation implemented by the brand’s in-house R&D team, NephroPlus is aiming to enhance the technology and equipment associated with dialysis procedures to improve the efficiency and affordability of life-sustaining dialysis treatment for patients suffering from end-stage renal diseases (ESRD) in the world.
A dialyzer, also called the artificial kidney is the most important apparatus used in the dialysis procedure; it draws out unclean blood from the patient’s body, filters out all the extra sugar, salt, waste, and fluid, and leads the cleaned blood back to the patient’s body. It is also the most expensive consumable in the dialysis procedure given its paramount functionality. The traditional dialyzer reprocessor requires manual cleaning which can lead to cross-infection in patients, however, there are many dialyzer processors available with automated reprocessing which eliminates the scope of manual errors that ultimately leads to cross infections, residual chemical infusion, environmental contamination, and much more.
NephroPlus has been granted patents for several innovations in the making of RenovaTM. What makes the product unique is – remote troubleshooting and cloud-based storage features. With the remote troubleshooting feature enabled, a biomedical engineer can simply access the machine’s operations by logging in to the device to check the functioning of every valve and fix any sort of bugs or malfunctions in operational configuration parameters, thereby saving the time to resolve the issue and the cost attached to the device maintenance. Cloud-based data storage for the dialyzer is the major breakthrough in dialysis management solutions. Initially, the dialyzers were built with an archaic printing system which gave a printed copy of the reprocessing status after patient use. The copy, however, gave poor-quality print, making it difficult for the doctors to study the reprocessing status and patient reports.
On announcing the launch of Renova, Mr. Vikram Vuppala, Founder and CEO, NephroPlus said, “Over time, a lot of advances have been seen in medical treatments, yet they can be ineffective, inefficient, and consumer-unfriendly. These shortcomings arise due to a range of problems due to medical errors. Such problems beg for innovative solutions involving all aspects of healthcare from technology to treatment delivery. With the introduction of NephroPlus’s debutant product innovation, we aim at reshaping dialysis care in Indian and beyond.”
“Apart from remote troubleshooting and linking the reprocessor to a cloud-based storage unit, several other hardware improvements have been made which fix many problems with the machines in the market. We plan to make these machines available to other dialysis centers as well to promote accessibility. We hope this will improve the efficiency of dialysis centers in the developing world and help to provide safe, effective dialysis to all patients.”, adds Mr. Kamal Shah, Co-founder & Director of Guest Services, NephroPlus
As part of pilot testing, Renova was installed at 4 NephroPlus centers across Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad to test its performance, fallibility, and technical drawbacks. ‘’Doctors will get access to reprocessing data which is stored online. Better analysis of the data will be possible including correlating reprocessing data with clinical outcomes. Patients will benefit as they will get access to a very safe and efficient reprocessing machine which will deliver better outcomes.’’, opines Dr. Suresh Sankar, Senior Vice-President of Clinical Affairs, NephroPLus.
Many studies have revealed that the provision of medical services for the treatment of endstage-kidney iseases (ESRD) poses serious financial challenges on account of well-equipped modalities related to dialysis services. By introducing the revoluntionary reprocessing technology, NephroPlus has offered a way to save costs of dialysis care services without compromising the quality. Mass manufacture of RenovaTM is in progress as the installation is programmed within a month.

The transaction will help NephroPlus to establish four dialysis centres as part of a broader partnership with the Ministry of Health, the Republic of Uzbekistan, after securing a $100M contract
Hyderabad, 4th January 2023: NephroPlus, India’s largest dialysis network and a pioneer in redefining dialysis care in India, signed a INR 69.5 Crores financing package with Asian Development Bank (ADB)to further its expansion plans in Uzbekistan for building four large dialysis centres. The transaction is a broader partnership with the Ministry of Health, the Republic of Uzbekistan, after securing a contract worth $100M, where NephroPlus will independently commission and operationalize these centres.
The transaction comprises a loan of up to INR 41.7 Crores from ADB’s ordinary capital resources and administration by ADB of a loan of up to INR 27.8 Crores million from Leading Asia’s Private Infrastructure Fund (LEAP). NephroPlus will primarily use the funds to design, build, operate and maintain the dialysis centres in Tashkent city, the Republic of Karakalpakstan, and the Khorezm region. Notably, the dialysis centre in Tashkent, with 160 machines capacity, will be the largest dialysis centre in the World.
NephroPlus will provide it’s highly recognized quality dialysis care to over 1,100 patients in Uzbekistan. It has established a 100% owned local subsidiary to operate the centres for this project. In addition, it intends to implement its RenAssure™ protocols to deliver a synchronized and convenient patient experience in Uzbekistan. An estimated 30,000 patients currently suffer from Kidney failure in Uzbekistan, with an estimated shortage of over 3,500 dialysis machines in the country.
Speaking on the transaction with ADB, Mr. Vikram Vuppala, Founder and CEO, NephroPlus ,said, “Our ambition to extend high-quality dialysis services in Uzbekistan is inspired by our vision to enable people on dialysis across the World lead long, happy and productive lives. We are pleased to introduce peritoneal dialysis for the very first time in Uzbekistan to improve access to dialysis for pediatric patients and also patients in rural areas. We are happy to be the private partner for Uzbekistan’s first international health care PPP and to embark on a relationship with an international financier such as ADB as we continue to grow our operations.”
Under this deal, ADB will also support NephroPlus in enhancing and implementing a gender action plan to increase women’s participation in technical and skilled work in dialysis treatment centres through specific training pieces and strengthen gender equality measures in its working environment. As a result, NephroPlus ensures that women make up half the personnel trained to use dialysis machines and conduct dialysis treatment across its global network.
“Dialysis allows people with kidney failure to lead productive lives. Unfortunately, the need for dialysis services in Uzbekistan has far outstripped supply, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic so this project will improve the availability and accessibility of much-needed dialysis services in the country. This project demonstrates how the private sector can play a role in closing the critical gaps in health care service delivery.” said ADB’s Private Sector Operations Department Investment specialist Amanda Tan.
